Green Circuits Process Engineering at Its Best – Stacked Capacitors

Green Circuits is a trusted EMS services provider, renowned for speed, quality, and efficacy.

One of Green Circuits’ top customers came to the GC team with a very challenging request.  This customer has an ATE Test board that has over three thousand 0603 capacitor placements.  The three thousand 0603 capacitor placements accompanied with the fact that the circuit board is 0.250 thickness would make this assembly very challenging for most assembly houses, but not Green Circuits. Green Circuits has the expertise and capabilities to successfully manufacture board of this type.

However, in this instance, there was an additional request for the board that raised the level of difficulty for this production run.  The customer requested that Green Circuits double stack all three thousand 0603 capacitors. To accomplish this, we would have to place three thousand 0603 capacitors onto the circuit board, and then place another three thousand 0603 capacitors on top of the existing capacitors.

At the beginning, hand soldering the stacked 0603 capacitors would be the easiest approach, but it would take over 12 hours to hand solder each board. The Green Circuits team would not settle for a production method that did not successfully address the rapid time-to-market needed for our customer.

Green Circuits’ process engineers spent a few weeks working on different processes and tooling to see what will yield the best results.  After this process was completed, the Green Circuits team was able to successfully accomplish a streamlined production for the board.

As you can see from the picture, Green Circuits’ process engineers came up with a very robust and repeatable process to complete the production run of the board.  This is another example of how Green Circuits process engineers can help find better and innovative ways to support our current and future customers.
